Meaning:
Its source is bon, an Old French name meaning "Good."
Narrative:
In the U.S., this surname may be given to young boys in honor of frontiersman Daniel Boone (1734-1820). He was first to explore the way west through the Cumberland Gap, and kept moving every time he found that he could see the chimney smoke of his nearest neighbor.
His travels finally came to an end in frontier Missouri, and every state from his native Pennsylvania westward to that point likes to claim him as either a founding father or a native son.
