• Galileo Galilei (born 1564, died 1642)

  Italian astronomer, physicist and mathematician. Forced by the church to recant his support for Copernicus' theory that the planets orbit the sun.

  • One of the first astronomers to use a telescope; discovered the moons of Jupiter (see list of Mathematicians, Physicists & Astronomers)
